Apple regularly boasts about how many of its new iPhone customers were previously Android users, and CEO Tim Cook has brought up the statistics during earnings calls on numerous occasions. Now, in an effort to make those figures even more impressive, the company just launched a trio of new TV spots aimed directly at getting Android users to jump ship in favor of the iPhone. Curiously, you won’t actually see an iPhone in any of them.


The short ads, each running no more than 15 seconds in length, are presented in the simple “them and us” style that Apple has had good luck with ever since the “I’m a Mac, and I’m a PC” series. In all three ads, the screen is split between “Your Phone” and “iPhone,” with bad things happening on one side, and much better things happening on the iPhone half.


The three ads focus on performance, security, and the actual act of switching devices, showing a glitchy animation being corrected by the iPhone, a robber failing to break into the iPhone half of the screen, and contacts jumping from “Your Phone” to the iPhone.


What’s particularly interesting about the ads is how you never actually see an iPhone at all. Like the old “I’m a Mac” ads, the aim here isn’t to directly sell any specific product, but simply to make sure you know that if you don’t own an iPhone, you’re not getting the best experience possible. Whether or not you — or any Android users in your life — will buy into that is anyone’s guess.

From: BGR - OnePlus announces a new referral program just before the OnePlus 5 launch

Rumors are a-flyin‘ about a new OnePlus phone set to come out this summer. The OnePlus 5, unsurprisingly, will be the follow-up to the OnePlus 3T, and the specs won’t be surprising for a 2017 flagship Android smartphone.

Provided that the price is in line with OnePlus’s previous smartphones — that is, a little less than the competition — we’re expecting it to sell just as well as OnePlus’s previous hit phones. But even though we don’t technically know when the OnePlus 5 is coming or what it’ll look like, we already know that OnePlus will have an incentive program in place.

In a forum post on Friday, a OnePlus staff member laid out the details for a new referral program. In short, anyone who buys a OnePlus phone (or has bought one in the past) gets a promo code, which they can give out to friends or share on social. If anyone uses that code to then buy a new OnePlus phone, they get $30 in credit for accessories. When your promo code gets used, you get points that also count towards accessories.

It’s not quite as good as the referral programs that Uber and Lyft have made popular for new riders, but it’s still a good freebie. Far more importantly, it virtually guarantees that everyone can get a free case with their new OnePlus 5.

In a lot of ways, it’s also a hint that OnePlus is returning to its roots: cheap phones and word-of-mouth marketing, rather than trying to take on Samsung head-on. When the first OnePlus phone came out, you needed an invite code to even be able to buy one. The artificial scarcity made the phone even more popular, and helped build OnePlus’s reputation.

This latest promo isn’t quite as virally exclusive, but it’s still a noble attempt by OnePlus to tap into the company’s most valuable resource: the fans.

Last week, Astral Pipes released a commercial in India that addresses the lack of our most basic needs: privacy when urinating and defecating. This is especially important for women, who take a risk every time they venture out to relieve themselves in nature. In the ad, a group of men in their pajamas go out to a field to do their business, when suddenly they are surrounded by a bunch of chanting women, who shame the men and even snap photos of them with an cel phone.

When the men plead with them to consider their honor, the women respond, “Oh, really? When we are assaulted or raped because we have to go to the field in the cover of darkness to relieve ourselves, what happens to privacy or honor?”

According to NPR:

More than 500 million people — representing more than half of the world’s toilet-less people – live in India. According to UNICEF, India has nearly 200,000 diarrheal deaths yearly among children under age five, the highest number in the world. Open defecation is a contributing factor.

And without private toilets, the health of women and girls suffers, too. Many develop genitourinary infections from not urinating frequently enough — and from poor hygiene during menstruation.

The U.N. report also says the lack of private toilets exposes women to physical attacks and even natural dangers like animal attacks and snake bites. Stories of girls being assaulted when they go to do their business in the fields abound.

The ad has gone viral on YouTube, at almost 600,000 views.
