From: BGR - Hidden changes in iOS 10.3 will give your iPhone a speed boost

After releasing a few hundred different beta versions over the past month or so, Apple on Monday finally released iOS 10.3 to the public. Eager iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users rushed to download and install the update, and they were greeted with some nifty new features. In a post on Monday afternoon, we went through the eight best new features in iOS 10.3, including a new Find My AirPods feature, updates to the Maps app, Apple’s new file system and more. There was one feature in particular that we listed in the post that deserves more attention though, and not many people realize it’s even there.

When Apple releases any new iOS software, hardcore Apple fans always rush to download and install it immediately, regardless of what new features Apple adds. This is a good thing for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that new iOS software always includes security updates that are crucial. iOS 10.3 is no different — it’s packed full of security fixes that users should be eager to install immediately.

Of course, the user-facing features are typically the main draw for new iOS updates, and iOS 10.3 has a few nice additions and changes. One set of changes in particular is worth noting, but it’s hiding in plain sight so most iPhone and iPad users won’t even notice it’s there.

Apple engineer Renaud Lienhart‏ tweeted on Monday afternoon about something that we mentioned in passing in our post covering the best new features in iOS 10.3. “iOS 10.3 feels ‘snappier,'” he said, “because many animations were slightly tweaked & shortened, for the better.”

https://twitter.com/NotoriousBUGS/status/846539233305124865

Long story short, Apple has made a number of small adjustments to the animations that are played when the user does things like opening an app, closing an app, or switching from one app to another. Longtime iPhone users may recall that Apple did something similar back in 2014 with iOS 7.1. The speed difference back then was much more dramatic and noticeable, but the improvements in iOS 10.3 are still nothing to scoff at.

If you have an iPhone or iPad and haven’t yet updated to iOS 10.3, a faster UI should be reason enough to install the update as soon as you can. iOS 10.3 is available to download in iTunes, or as an over the air (OTA) update accessing in the Settings app by navigating to General > Software Update.

From: BGR - Apple squeaks out court win against Chinese company that almost doesn’t even exist

Apple might have the most iconic line of smartphones on the planet but that doesn’t mean it’s had an easy go of it in every corner of the map. In China, for instance, Apple has been forced to fight for the privilege of even selling its products, with government officials constantly bashing the company and endless legal hurdles that regularly threaten to damage its reputation. This week, Apple can claim at least a small victory in the country as a Beijing court ruled in favor of Apple in a patent case versus a small Chinese phone maker which cried foul.

Shenzhen Baili — a practically nonexistent smartphone maker which seems to have continued to live on after its failed business ventures solely for the purpose of collecting on its claims against Apple — won a ruling last May from the Beijing Intellectual Property Office stating that Apple had infringed on its design patents for its 100C smartphone. The 100C, while rounded on the edges like the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, is fairly generic and could easily be mistaken for just about any Android device from the past few years.

Nevertheless, the ruling threatened to give Apple headaches down the road, and so it was brought before a judge in Beijing. In the time since Baili initially filed the lawsuit in late 2014 the company has completely collapsed, and reports suggest that at present there’s very little to the company aside from a name and the backing of Chinese tech giant Baidu. The favorable ruling for Apple doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be the end of the legal road in this case, but it’s certainly a promising sign.

From: BGR - Killer deal: Buy an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus at Target and get a free $300 gift card

If you still haven’t scooped up an iPhone 7, and are looking for a killer deal on one of the best smartphones of the year, then you should definitely check out this brand new Target iPhone 7 promo.

Target’s deal is offering customers a $300 gift card for every iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus purchased in a Target store. That’s almost half the price of the entry-level iPhone 7, and it’s a great deal.

The deal is too good to pass up if you’re okay with buying any iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus except for the red versions, and it does require the activation of a new line or eligibility for an upgrade. Here’s the fine print:

Valid in store only. Limit one manufacturer and one Target coupon per item. Limit of 4 identical coupons per household, per day. Void if copied, scanned, altered, transferred, purchased, sold or prohibited by law. Item(s) may not be available at all stores. Not valid in Canada. Free Target GiftCard not valid as payment on this purchase; terms and conditions apply. Quantities limited; no rain checks. Maximum retail value $300 for free Target GiftCard. No cash value.

The deal expires on April 1st, so you have less than a week to jump on it — follow this link to learn more about Target’s iPhone 7 limited sale. If you’re looking for the red iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, that’s also available from Target (see the same link above), but unfortunately you won’t get a $300 gift card with either red model.

You can try each one in four different Wangle Zones – Earth, Fire, Air and Water – each with a different look and feel, and with trickier zones giving you higher scores:

‘Easy Earth’ has a Wire that’s not too slippery, and the whole things spins quite sedately.

‘Frisky Fire’ has a slick, polished wire that the Pip slides around rather more quickly; you’ll have to work harder to keep it under control.

‘Turbulent Air’ brings a fresh challenge, as the Wangle Wire tries to slip from your grasp, and twitches back and forth when you aren’t moving it yourself.

Lastly, ‘Deep Deep Water’ requires all your wits, as a blackened Wangle Wire in some gloomy depths is lit by the gleams of light from the Pip.

From: BGR - The 8 best new features Apple added to your iPhone in iOS 10.3

After releasing roughly 437 different iOS 10.3 betas to developers over the past few weeks alone, Apple has finally released iOS 10.3 to the public. The new mobile software is available as an over the air (OTA) download or as a download through iTunes on a Mac or Windows PC, and it’s compatible with 19 different Apple devices dating as far back as the iPhone 5, 4th-generation iPad, iPad mini 2, and the 6th-generation iPod touch.

Should you be excited? Should you rush to download and install iOS 10.3 on your iPhone or iPad as soon as possible? In this post, we’ll run through all of the top new features Apple introduced in iOS 10.3.

Find My AirPods: The most talked-about new feature in iOS 10.3 is Find My AirPods, which obviously only matters if you own a pair of Apple’s hot new AirPods. They’re still next to impossible to find in Apple stores, so Amazon is really your only hope if you want AirPods anytime soon.

There’s now a new option in the Find My iPhone app that can track down your AirPods, but it’s nowhere near as accurate or as useful as it is for iPhones and iPads since AirPods don’t have a GPS radio or the ability to connect to any networks. Instead, this is basically a log that will show you the last location where your iPhone was connected to your AirPods.

If you forget your AirPods somewhere, this nifty new feature could definitely help you find them. If you haven’t connected to them in a while or if they’re stolen, you’re pretty much out of luck.

App Transition Animations: You might not even notice this one, but Apple made a subtle change to the transition animations that are shown as apps open and close in iOS 10.3. They now have slightly more rounded edges, which is definitely not a big deal. But they also seem to move a bit faster, which is a big deal since it speeds up the interface a bit.

Weather in Maps: In the Maps app, users can now 3D Touch the weather icon to see a local forecast for the area.

Apple ID Profile: There is now a new Apple ID profile section in the Settings app that you’ll see at the very top of the first screen. It gives you access to a single page where you’ll find your full contact profile, security settings, payment information, iCloud account details, App Store settings, Family Sharing settings and a bit more.

Also of note, this page displays every Apple device where you’re currently signed in.

iCloud Storage: You’ll now find a new section at the top of your iCloud settings page with a breakdown of how your iCloud storage is being used.

New File System: This is a big one, though it takes place completely behind the scenes so you won’t even realize it’s happening. Installing iOS 10.3 will automatically update your iPhone or iPad to use Apple File System (APFS) instead of HFS+. APFS is better optimized for NAND flash storage so files can be accessed more quickly, and it also supports stronger encryption.

Voice Call Continuity for Verizon: This is obviously a new feature that will only be appreciated by Verizon Wireless subscribers, but iCloud calling features are now finally supported if you use Verizon. That means you can make or receive voice calls on your Mac, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch.

Podcasts Widget: You know that widgets panel you never use? There’s a new Podcasts widget available now (it’s actually a pretty cool addition for podcast fans).

From: BGR - iOS 10.3 now available to download on iPhone and iPad

Following a barrage of betas over the past week, Apple rolled out the final version of iOS 10.3 to the public on Monday. After launching iOS 10 last September, Apple was relatively quick to follow up with iOS 10.1 in October and iOS 10.2 in December, but it ended up taking more than three months to finalize iOS 10.3.

Thankfully, the latest update is packed with new features and fixes that should make it worth the wait. Along with bringing the frequently discussed Find My AirPods functionality to the Find My iPhone app, iOS 10.3 also changes the animations that occur when opening and closing apps, adds weather forecasts to the Maps app and gives users the option to add a Podcasts widget in the panel where widgets go.

You can read more about these features and other features coming in iOS 10.3 right here. These might not be as exciting to the average consumer as the new emoji or the dedicated TV app that arrived alongside iOS 10.2, but they will make iOS a better, faster platform for current and future iPhones and iPads.

It’s also worth noting that 9.3 was the final numbered release of the iOS 9 era, so unless something changes this generation, we likely won’t see anything more than bug fixes and the like from here on out.

If you want to update your iOS device to iOS 10.2 immediately, you can do so by heading to Settings > General > Software Update and tapping “Download and Install” at the bottom of the page. As always, you can also apply the update through iTunes, though, fair warning, that does require you to use iTunes.

From: GeekWire - T-Mobile will offer free AppleCare for iPhones and iPads as part of its Premium Device Protection plan

T-Mobile customers can now get AppleCare Services included when they sign up for the Bellevue, Wash.-based carrier’s Premium Device Protection. When a T-Mobile customer buys a new iPhone or iPad and signs up for the carrier’s $12 per month device protection plan, it includes access to Apple’s phone and chat-based tech support, cheaper repairs, and other features of the service. On its own, one year of AppleCare costs between $99 and $129 for iPhones, depending on the model and plan. Incorporating AppleCare is T-Mobile’s latest attempt to bring in new customers by adding features — a strategy that has been working. At… Read More

From: BGR - What if Apple already told us what it’s going to call the iPhone 8?

Apple will release three new iPhones this year, including the iPhone 7s, the iPhone 7s Plus, and the iPhone 8. The last one will be the iPhone everybody wants, thanks to a fresh new design and a bunch of features never seen before in an iPhone. There are various leaks that seem to be in agreement on what the iPhone 8 will have to offer, but not all of them agree on the product’s commercial name. iPhone 8 is the most popular moniker people use, but we’ve also seen a bunch of additional names including iPhone X, iPhone Pro, and iPhone Edition.

Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter what the most anticipated smartphone of the year is called. But a new report suggests Apple may have already told us the iPhone 8’s real name.

A recent Forbes piece suggests that the iPhone 8’s name may be already be known, assuming you can interpret Apple’s recent actions.

Currently, Apple is in the process of rebranding several product lines. There’s MacBook Pro and MacBook for laptops, with the MacBook Air line having been discontinued. The iPad Air was killed too, so you can currently shop for iPad or iPad Pro — though an iPad mini continues to exist in the Apple store.

Using the same logic, Forbes argues that Apple might begin killing off iPhone numbers this year. The iPhone 8 may simply be known as iPhone alongside the iPhone 7s series. Or Apple could use the “iPhone Pro” moniker to define the iPhone 8, and then simply refer to every other iPhone it’ll sell as iPhone. We would have iPhone SE, iPhone, iPhone Plus, and iPhone Pro.

Ignoring the iPhone SE and iPad mini, Apple would have iPhone, iPad, and MacBook selling right alongside iPhone Pro, iPad Pro, and MacBook Pro.

While this makes sense in some ways and the iPhone’s name might be better off without the numbering scheme, there are several gaping holes in this logic. For example, Apple would still have to find a way to differentiate older iPhone models. Every year, Apple continues to sell the previous year’s iPhone models right alongside the brand new ones.

Also, “Plus” doesn’t really fit into this proposed naming scheme. Right now, Apple sells two different sized iPad Pro models that it calls “9.7‑inch iPad Pro” and “12.9‑inch iPad Pro.” With that in mind, why would Apple differentiate between the 4.7-inch iPhone and the 5.5-inch iPhone by adding a “Plus” to the name? Wouldn’t it just be “4.7-inch iPhone” and “5.5-inch iPhone” if Apple goes this route?
